We have moved the office from downtown to the north-east corner of the City of Toronto. The new Sewells Road Transitional and Affordable Housing building opened its doors in late June and our office was moved to the new location as soon as tenants started moving in.

The change in location not only meant a new mailing address but new phone numbers as well. Our new phone number is: 416-281-2057 and the new fax number is: 416-281-2179. The program’s email address remains the same as before: info@aboriginalhsc.org.

It has been a busy summer of change. I have been pleasantly surprised with the number of people who have called asking about subsidized housing and even more amazed at how many have made their way out to our new location in order to see the new building while applying for housing at the same time. I don’t mind giving a tour if you call in advance to arrange a convenient time.

More and more users of the Aboriginal Housing Support Centre are signing on to MSN Messenger service and connecting with me by adding: ahsc_1@hotmail.com to their contact list. It is a quick and easy way to chat with me and exchange information in ‘real time’. My MSN Messenger contact list is growing daily and I’m finding it to be a handy way to offer our services to the Aboriginal community.

Don’t hesitate to phone me or email me if you have any questions regarding applying for subsidized housing in the City of Toronto. My email address is: wcanney@aboriginalhsc.org.

Workshops

The most important thing about providing Life Skills workshops or arranging for special speakers to come in and meet with the users of our program is that we ensure that the topic areas presented, and the people we approach to make the presentations to you, are of the type that are of interest and meaning to those of you who rely upon the Aboriginal Housing Support Centre for help and guidance with your everyday living.

Although there are no workshops planned at the moment, I am always open to arranging a time for a group of us to get together and learn more about the challenges people face in their daily lives. I will need to hear from you about what sorts of things you would like to learn more about. Is maintaining your present housing, or finding more affordable housing, a major issue for you? Is budgeting, financial planning, having a steady income of concern to you? Are you finding it to be a monumental task surviving as a single parent? Are you ‘job ready’ for today’s workplace? How can this program help you with your daily struggles? What sorts of workshops, or support meetings, do you want AHSC to offer?

Please communicate with me and let me know what you think would be the most relevant presentation(s) that AHSC can arrange for you. Call me at 416-281-2057 or email me at: wcanney@aboriginalhsc.org and, let’s talk about it.
